The opportunity has come for those in the convenience industry to once again shine on the local and global stage and also win a trip to the NACS Show in Atlanta. In 2015 our very own Fran Drager (Z Energy) and Rachel Williams (British American Tobacco) won the Best Retailer and Best Supplier presentation at the NACS Show in Las Vegas!
The Peter Jowett Scholarship Award is a unique opportunity for NZACS members to challenge others in New Zealand and internationally in thinking about our industry.
The Peter Jowett Scholarship Competition topic has been determined by the countries participating in the competition namely Canada, Australia, UK and New Zealand.
The 2016 topic is:
“In light of increasing competition, particularly from supermarkets, pharmacies, dollar stores and low price retailers, how can convenience stores enhance value in order to generate profitable and sustainable growth?”
Employees from Retailer and Supplier member companies are invited to select candidates between 21 and 36 years of age for the 2016 competition (candidates must be no older than 36 years of age on 31st of May 2016).
The Process:
1. Participants will be required to register their interest by 30 April 2016 by Clicking Here
2. Participants will be required to submit the following by emailing Kathy Faulkner (kathy@researchrelay.co.nz) no later than 30 June 2016
a. 10 slide PowerPoint presentation (include brief explanation of each slide)
b. An executive summary covering the following:
i. Your plan / idea (what is your idea)
ii. The argument (addressing the topic)
iii. The reasons (how your idea will work)
iv. Summary
c. Presenter biography (e.g. who you are, your career path)
3. Local judges will assess all submissions and select the supplier and retailer finalists. These finalists will present their 12-minute presentation at the Peter Jowett and Industry Awards event scheduled for 25th August 2016 at the Crowne Plaza hotel.
4. The audience of members present will vote on the presentations and select the best supplier and best retailer presentation. Winners will then travel to Atlanta to take on international finalists at the NACS Show from 18th – 21st October 2016 for the international award. NZACS will cover the cost of flights and accommodation for the duration of the NACS Show. By participating you acknowledge that should you win the Peter Jowett Scholarship, your employer will release you from work obligations to travel to Atlanta during those NACS Show dates. The prize is non-transferable.
In the past some members have run an internal competition for their staff as a way of selecting their candidates. This is an excellent development program for people working in the convenience channel.
The scoring guidelines for selecting the finalists for the New Zealand competition are:
> Addresses the question 40%
> Innovative thinking 25%
> Idea could be implemented 25%
> Quality of presentation 10%
The scoring sheet for the NACS Show in Atlanta still needs to be finalised and participants will be notified as soon as we know. We look forward to welcoming our 2016 entrants. To register your interest, please click on the link below:
